Extending the Deck

This page shows some photos I took while extending the deck in our backyard. After ripping up the deck boards, the existing framing looks pretty reasonable, so I decided not to rip out the framing.

Lumber Pile

Pile of lumber, all presure treated. We decided we didn't like the rounded top boards, so we're going to use 2x6's.

Old Deck

After I ripped up a few boards, the existing framing looked to be in reasonable shape, so I decided to keep it. The new deck will fill in the gap between the existing deck and the hot-tub and also between the house and the hot-tub.

Framing Done

The old deck is completely ripped off, and the new framing is completed. I also stained the hot tub while the lower portion was still accessible.

More Framing

More framing between the house and the hot tub. A hinged insert will go in the window area. With the insert closed, you'll be able to walk over the window well, and with it propped open, it will allow light into the basement.

Rat Deterrent

With all the construction in the neighborhood, we've had problems with rats. I installed some wire mesh around the bay area to keep them out. The joists of the bay extend over the basement wall, so the rats were just going between the joists and into the basement ceiling. I've also installed mesh and/or boards around the periphery of the deck to keep them out from under the deck itself as well.

New Decking Boards

I decided to use 2x6's for the new decking.
